Many of us are not the biggest fans of getting cavities filled. Lucky for us there is a way to prevent that from happening. SEALANTS! Our great West Seattle dentist Dr. Kirchner is a firm believer in sealing your teeth prior to a cavity beginning. What are sealants exactly might you ask? Sealants are thin coatings that are painted on the chewing surfaces of your teeth (molars mainly) and they help prevent cavities for many years to come.
Do Sealants hurt?
No! There is absolutely no pain associated with Sealants. They are simply placed by your dentist, hygienist or dental assistant. They simply clean the chewing surface of your tooth, place thin coats of sealing material in the grooves of your teeth and finish it by curing it with a light. Absolutely no anesthetic is required. Most of us won’t even know we had any treatment done at all!
Are children the only candidates for Sealants?
The answer is NO! Sealants are great for any person, any age. It has been proven that Sealants can help reduce the chances of getting cavities by 80%. Most children get their Sealants placed as soon as their permanent molars have erupted, average ages between 6-12. However, it is a great idea to seal the grooves of your teeth at any age. Nobody likes to have cavities, so if we can try to prevent it, why wouldn’t we?!
Do I still need to brush and floss?
Yes! All though Sealants are preventative, it cannot replace your daily brushing and flossing to help reduce your chances of tooth decay. Brushing and Flossing get in between the teeth and help clean ALL surfaces of the tooth, while Sealants are only placed on the chewing surface of the tooth.
Be sure to ask Dr. Kirchner at your next visit if you can get Sealants! Most insurance policies cover them and even if they don’t, sealing those grooves will help in reducing the risks for more extensive & expensive dental treatment in the future!
